Michigan Society of Professional Engineers Southeastern Chapter

This year, the Chapter hosted the MATHCOUNTS Chapter Competition at the Woodhaven Community Center again this year on February 7.  Twelve (12) schools and a total of 80 students participated, which is down from pre-pandemic numbers but continues stability since 2022.  A total of twelve (12) chapter members assisted with the competition, along with one (1) non-member, who is the former Fairlane Chapter coordinator. Patrick M. Lewis, P.E., Chapter Coordinator, also served as emcee for the Southeastern Chapter competition, and assisted in this role for the Oakland Chapter competition Countdown Round as well.  The winning teams were HIS Homeschool of Monroe, coached by Jennifer Spencer, and Divine Child Middle School, coached by professional engineer and chapter member Scott Sterbenz.  These teams and four (4) other at-large individuals represented the Chapter at the State competition at Michigan State University on March 23.  Chapter member Patrick M. Lewis, P.E. emceed the testing room and Countdown Round and member Martha F. Thompson, P.E., F.NSPE, F.MSPE coordinated data entry at the state competition.  Chapter members Mike Smith, P.E., and Jacob LaBo also assisted with grading.  While we did not have any teams place among the top schools, one of our competitors, Martha Spencer, finished 11th individually and narrowly missed becoming the first Chapter competitor to reach the Countdown Round at the State competition.
